Did you see the AWESOME lenticular clouds we had on Friday? They were the best examples I’ve seen in a couple years around here. Many of you took photos…thanks for sharing them! You can always send me photos or movies in the Peaks2Plains Weather app on the “Send2Matt” page in the bottom, right-hand corner.
Lenticular clouds form when swift, stable air gets forced up and over the terrain. When enough moisture is present, clouds will often form at the crest of the wave as the orographic lift cools the air to saturation. They are typically associated with warm weather and they typically come with some breezes/gusts. The most typical time of year to get them is during the cooler/colder months. Too often in the summer the air is too unstable over the mountains for them to form.
