OUR WEATHER. TOGETHER: Late night large hail makers in Colorado City and just to the west of Haswell over the plains. Storms blew up about 10pm and got quite strong in spots over the next couple of hours. I wasn’t sure severe weather was going to be a big risk, but the moisture moving back toward the hills fired up two really strong storms.
The storm in Colorado city had all the signals of 2″ and greater hail as it moved across the east side of Colorado City, including a three body scatter spike (gold arrow) visible on TAMKO Live Radar. This is a classic indicator of large hail – and happens when the radar beam hits large hail, bounces to ground, back up into the storm and then hits rain and hail again before heading back to the radar. This extra long trip tricks the radar into thinking the return is farther away from the radar (behind the storm if you will) and gives false, weaker echo behind the updraft of the storm. It’s a classic signal.
