Visible glow part of prep work on 24 Fire

Fire visible in parts of southern Colorado Saturday evening, March 21, 2026, part of prep work within the fire area to prevent a run to the south.

The big glow you see this evening is the fire fighting crews doing burn operations on the south end of the main burn area in preparation for the arrival of the cold front and to fortify the fire for the wind shift out of the north early on Sunday morning.

I know it can look scary, but the firefighters use fire to their advantage when the wind is right. Sometimes you have to burn unburnt areas where and when you want it to so that the fire isn’t able to, or it’s harder to move past these already burned areas when you DON’T want it to.

It’s the same reason the southern burn area was created to act as a controlled buffer between where the fire started and the homes and buildings in the evacuation area of Fremont County. We learned this from Isaac Brisk, SOCO Wildland Team Public Information Officer, during the extended live coverage we did together Saturday evening.

I’ll be up when the cold front arrives and will be keeping an eye on it.
