WEATHER IMPACT: High School Football
Practices are about to start on this hot afternoon and weather plays a big role. Intense workouts, turf fields, bleachers reflecting sunlight all make the afternoon heat even more noticeable for high school football players looking to make an impact on their team as the high school football season gets underway in August.
Justin Rich, head football coach at The Classical Academy in Colorado Springs, talked to Matt Meister about the precautions they take for student athletes during early season workouts.
Scheduling the practice around short, helmet-less breaks and more organized water timeouts, along with consistent support from training staff and team managers and a close eye from coaches help to make sure athletes stay hydrated and as cool as possible.
Rich discusses how the team preparation in the weight room help get the athletes primed for the summer heat and early season workouts and how a culture is passed down from upper grade levels to the younger players to ensure health and safety at the Academy District 20 charter school.
