About April…showers that is…

I know the 24 Fire and other fires late last week have many concerned. Rightfully so.

Here’s a movie from the model I usually prefer for longer range forecasts. I’ve got the energy in the atmosphere (oranges/reds), flowlines at about 18,000′, clouds and precipitation all on here. It’s a lot, I know. You can handle it! I’ll help ya out – here’s what to know and what you’re looking for in this movie.

We’ve been under a big ridge but we’re going to yield to multiple waves (troughs) in the flow – flipping the script. We’ve got two main waves, one on about April 1st and another about a week later. We watch those close because they at least have the potential to be more organized, larger type storms.

Ahead of that first wave there are smaller waves (called shortwaves or shortwave troughs) that get caught up in the southwest flow and increase moisture over the area this coming weekend, bringing the chance of scattered showers to Colorado. This lead moisture comes from the subtropics and won’t have cold air with it so for many of us, except for the highest mountains, we’d be talking rain, and maybe some thunder.
